Method
- Separate the 12-pack of Hawaiian sweet rolls into individual pieces. For best results, let them sit out on a wire rack for an hour to dry slightly.
- In a wide, shallow bowl, vigorously whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until completely smooth.
- Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the skillet.
- Working in batches, quickly dip each Hawaiian roll into the egg custard, coating all sides. Do not let them soak; a quick 2-second dip is sufficient.
- Place the coated rolls into the hot skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes.
- Using tongs, briefly sear the four edges of each roll for about 30 seconds per side to ensure the custard is fully cooked and the rolls are browned all over.
- Transfer cooked rolls to a plate. Wipe the skillet clean if necessary, add more butter, and repeat with the remaining rolls.
- To make the glaze, whisk the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla together in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over the warm French toast rolls, dust with powdered sugar, and serve immediately.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or air fryer to restore the crisp exterior.
