Ingredients

Base & Filling
  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
  • 6-8 slices deli ham thinly sliced
  • 6-8 slices cheese cheddar, swiss, or havarti
Assembly & Garnish
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tsp water
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds optional
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 8 star toppers cut from cheese or peppers

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pizza cutter or knife
  • Wooden skewers

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Soak wooden skewers in water.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface. Layer the ham slices over the pastry, followed by the cheese slices.
  3. Using a pizza cutter, slice the pastry lengthwise into 1-inch wide strips.
  4. Take one strip and fold it back and forth in an accordion style, starting with wider folds at the bottom and getting narrower at the top to form a tree shape.
  5. Insert a skewer through the center of the folded pastry tree to hold it in place. Place on the baking sheet.
  6. Brush the tops generously with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Garnish with a star topper and fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Keep the pastry cold while working. If it gets too soft, chill the assembled trees for 10 minutes before baking.
