Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb Lean ground beef 90% lean or higher to reduce grease
  • 1 medium Carrot Very finely grated or pureed
  • 0.25 cup Fresh parsley Finely chopped (stems removed)
  • 0.5 cup Oat flour Or finely blended rolled oats
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1-2 tbsp Water or Low-Sodium Bone Broth Optional, only if mixture is too dry. Must be onion/garlic free.

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pizza cutter or knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to a low 250°F (120°C). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the lean ground beef, finely grated carrot, minced parsley, oat flour, and egg. Mix thoroughly with your hands until well combined into a dense meatloaf texture.
  3. Turn the mixture out onto the prepared baking sheet. Press and roll it out into a flat, even rectangle, about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes to set the meat.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, slice the semi-cooked meat into individual sticks (approx 1 inch by 4 inches). Gently separate the sticks so air can circulate around them.
  6. Return the pan to the oven and continue baking at 250°F (120°C) for another 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on desired chewiness. Blot any excess grease with a paper towel halfway through.
  7. Once they reach a firm, jerky-like texture, remove from the oven and let them cool completely on the pan before storing.

Notes

Storage: Because these contain no artificial preservatives, they MUST be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Dogs love them frozen! Never add onions or garlic to dog treats.
