Ingredients

Sandwich Ingredients
  • 1 package Hawaiian sweet rolls 12-count
  • 12 slices Sharp cheddar cheese Deli sliced
  • 12 slices Provolone or Havarti cheese Deli sliced
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter or Mayonnaise Softened, for the crust
  • 1 tbsp Fresh parsley Finely chopped, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Serrated knife

Method

  1. Separate the Hawaiian rolls and slice each one in half horizontally using a serrated knife.
  2. Generously spread softened butter or mayonnaise on the outside tops and bottoms of all the rolls.
  3. Layer one slice of cheddar and one slice of provolone inside each roll. (Fold the cheese if necessary so it doesn't hang too far over the edges).
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Do not use high heat, or the sweet rolls will burn.
  5. Place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottoms are deeply golden brown and crispy.
  6. Carefully flip the sandwiches. Cover the skillet with a lid for the final 1-2 minutes to trap steam and ensure the cheese completely melts.
  7. Remove from heat, sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley, and serve immediately.

Notes

Using mayonnaise instead of butter on the outside yields a surprisingly even, crunchy crust without a mayo taste. Cook low and slow due to the sugar content in the rolls.
