Ingredients

The Mint Base
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted, plus extra for dusting
  • 2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
Optional Additions
  • 2 drops gel food coloring red or green
  • 1 tsp milk or cream only if needed for consistency

Equipment

  • Hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Fine-mesh Sifter
  • Candy Molds (optional)

Method

  1. Beat softened butter, condensed milk, and peppermint extract until smooth.
  2. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until a firm, pliable dough forms. Add a little milk if too dry.
  3. If coloring, divide dough and mix in gel food coloring.
  4. Press dough into lightly sugared candy molds or roll into small pieces and press with a fork dipped in powdered sugar.
  5. Place shaped mints on parchment paper. Air-dry at room temperature for 12-24 hours until a slight crust forms.
  6. Store dry mints in an airtight container at room temperature, layered with wax paper.

Notes

Sifting the powdered sugar is essential for a smooth texture. Do not cover the mints while they are air-drying.
