Servings: 8 sandwiches
Course: Appetizer, Lunch, Snack
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 8 slices white sandwich bread or bread of choice
  • 4 tbsp butter softened
  • 8 slices cheddar or American cheese
  • 8 slices ham or deli turkey/bologna for crosses
For the Gooey Filling
  • 4 tbsp mustard (Dijon or yellow) or sweet relish acts as a thick gooey sauce base

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Baking sheet or griddle/pan

Method

  1. Cut the bread into coffin shapes by slicing off the top corners to create a subtle taper.
  2. Cut small cross shapes from the slices of ham/deli meat.
  3. Spread mustard/relish on 8 of the coffin-shaped bread slices (the bottoms). This is your gooey base.
  4. Place one slice of cheese on top of the spread on each of the 8 bottom slices.
  5. Butter the outsides of the remaining 8 slices (the tops) and the assembled bottoms if using the closed grilled method. Otherwise, leave the tops unbuttered and proceed to open-faced toasting.
  6. Grill the sandwiches closed until golden and the cheese is melted and gooey, or bake open-faced at 350°F (175°C) until the cheese is molten.
  7. Once melted, place one deli meat cross on top of the **melted gooey cheese** on each sandwich.
  8. Serve immediately while warm and the cheese is still molten.

Notes

Broil or bake open-faced for faster prep. Use a sharp knife for clean coffin cuts. Pair with tomato soup for a complete Halloween meal. Use soft, meltable cheese for the best gooey texture.
