Ingredients

Brownie Base
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-processed preferred
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup chocolate chips optional
Kit Kat Layer & Topping
  • 1 ½ cups chopped Kit Kat bars roughly 8-10 fun-size bars, chopped
  • 10-12 bars whole fun-size Kit Kat bars for layering
  • some pieces crushed Kit Kat pieces for topping

Equipment

  • 9x9 inch baking pan
  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x9 inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the granulated sugar until combined.
  3. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Stir with a rubber spatula just until combined; do not overmix. Fold in the chopped Kit Kats (and chocolate chips, if using).
  6. Pour half of the brownie batter into the prepared pan. Evenly layer the whole fun-size Kit Kat bars on top of the batter.
  7. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the Kit Kat layer and carefully spread to cover. Sprinkle with crushed Kit Kat pieces.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  9. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before lifting out with the parchment paper and slicing into squares.

Notes

For the cleanest cuts, cool the brownies *completely* and then refrigerate for 1 hour before slicing with a hot, sharp knife.
