Ingredients

Pastries
  • 1 package puff pastry sheets thawed (usually 2 sheets)
  • 0.5 cup strawberry jam or raspberry jam
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tsp water
Toppings
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar for dusting
  • 0.25 cup dark chocolate chips melted (optional)

Equipment

  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold thawed puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Gently roll out any creases.
  3. Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter. Place them on the prepared baking sheets spaced 1 inch apart.
  4. Use a smaller cutter or knife to lightly score a border inside each heart (don't cut through). Prick the center with a fork.
  5. Place 1 teaspoon of jam in the center of each heart, staying within the scored border.
  6. Brush the edges of the pastry with the egg wash mixture.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  8. Cool on a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with melted chocolate if desired.

Notes

Do not overfill the hearts or the jam will spill out during baking.
